UPDATE: According to Luke Edwards at The Journal, Newcastle manager Chris Hughton is confident the club will sign Williamson. He said,
“In all honesty I’ve kept out of the politics of why it didn’t happen last week … I’m under the impression they’re working very hard on it and we’re confident it’s going to happen. I just want the player here. I hope we’re close to resolving it. We were disappointed it didn’t go through a couple of days ago and we’re hopeful something will happen very soon.”
January 23rd, 2010 According to Mark Douglas at The Journal, the deal has been put on hold. It is reported that if Portsmouth sell him, the club will have to pay Watford (who sold Williamson to Portsmouth) £1.5million in back payments and sell-on fees.
The deal was only for £1million so they would lose money on the selling of Williamson.
January 22nd, 2010 According to Mark Douglas at The Journal, Newcastle have agreed to pay £1million for Portsmouth defender Mike Williamson. The two parties were negotiating personal terms last night.

UPDATE: According to ESPN Soccernet, the embargo has been lifted. Peter Storrie said,
“We are absolutely delighted that th embargo has been lifted, as we have been working very hard for the past few days with the Premier League to achieve this.
“I can confirm we are looking at an Egyptian striker Avram has targeted, but we have to examine the work permit situation. We are also now hopeful we can have Jamie O’Hara back on loan from Spurs.”
January 24th, 2010 According to ESPN Soccernet, Portsmouth director Peter Storrie expects the transfer embargo to be lifted on Monday. Storrie said,
“I see no reason now why the Premier League shouldn’t lift the embargo now. All the necessary documents have gone over to the Premier League over the weekend regarding the rescheduling of transfer monies owed to Udinese, so I see no reason why they should lift our embargo. We don”t own any UK clubs money, and all the foreign clubs have agreed payment schedules.”
